House of Light

The House of Light, first opened over twelve years ago and has now been ‘under the umbrella’ of Catholic Care for just over a year.  During this time we have adapted some of our systems to fall in line with the agency, as we integrate into a larger organisation.
In the past, the House was staffed by volunteers and everybody ‘lived in’.  Non-residential staff have gradually been recruited and now only three volunteers, the manager (and his wife) live at the House.  The three remaining volunteers are all young people, who have given up a year as ‘Time for God’ before moving on to further their studies.
The past year has seen the abilities of all our residents being stretched.  In the words of her tutor Ann has become a one-woman factory turning out masses of pottery and models, which are gradually taking over the House!  George is continuing with a course in Independent Living at Park Lane College and has the very real prospect of a job when he finishes.
We are also trying to become a more outward looking house, and continue to try to play an active role in our own parish.  Each resident sent a shoebox full of basic needs and a few extra goodies to Romania before Christmas, and we are taking part in the ‘Trees for Life’ project  - planting trees and providing other facilities in India, as our Millennium contribution.  We have also invited all our neighbours and friends from other churches in the area to visit us.  We believe that strangers are only friends we have not yet met – and we do like making new friends.
