November 20th, 2009 - Bank House Comes Of Age!

Bank House Comes Of Age!

Bank House in Bradford reached a magnificent milestone in November - 21 years of providing supported accommodation for people with mental health problems and we could not let that pass unnoticed.

When founded it was an innovative vision of how people could be taken out of long term hospital care to live independently in the community providing they had the right support. This worked well and eventually Catholic Care opened three more similar schemes in Leeds, Bradford and Calderdale.

Mark Wiggin led a chorus of "Happy Birthday to you" but pointed out it was not sung to the building but to the people who live and work here who make this a successful scheme.

Two tenants who moved in to Bank House soon after it opened still live with us.  One of them spoke movingly at the celebration of how she had arrived with her possessions in two black bags after being 10 years in hospital.  She said she would need two removal vans if she were to move now!  She talked of having got her life back by living at Bank House.

It was lovely to see Stuart Hanlon, Canon Maguire and Kelvin Lawton at the party, as they were involved from the start, along with Peter McHale who unfortunately could not attend the celebration, but was certainly there in spirit.

Let\'s hope this valuable service will continue for at least another 21 years! Congratulations!
