Parish Life - FAQ
What is Catholic Care?
Catholic Care is the social care charity of the Diocese of Leeds. The charity grew out of the children and family work started by the Diocese of Leeds in 1863 and originally focused on children through adoption and orphanages but today's modern services include work with vulnerable adults, older people and community projects.

What is the link with parishes?
The link is a very old and strong one. Though our parish and deanery networks Catholic Care has provided services to hundreds of families in the Diocese of Leeds.

Our official link with the Parishes began in 1911 when the Good Shepherd Collection in the Schools and the Annual Appeal in the Parishes began to raise money for destitute children and unmarried mothers.

How can I get involved?
You can support us through our fundraising programme, voluntary work or as a parish representative. You can be part of our Gift Aid programme and receive regular newsletters about our work or volunteer some time to support our services or fundraise.

Be a parish representative.
Parish representatives are an important link between the parish and Catholic Care. The role involves linking your parish, parish priest or deacon and parishioners with Catholic Care by being a contact person in the parish to promote the work of Catholic Care. We provide training, promotional materials and support.

Where does CC get its funding from?
Catholic Care is funded from voluntary and statutory sources. Voluntary income includes fundraising by schools through the Good Shepherd programme, from parishes through the Annual Appeal and from individual sponsors and donors that include legacies and wills. Most of our services are commissioned through local authorities who pay us to deliver much needed social services to individuals who have been assessed as needing support or care.

Who runs CC?
Catholic Care is run by a Board of Trustees and the Bishop of Leeds is the chair of the trustees. The Trustees delegate everyday operational decisions to its chief executive officer who managers the senior staff team. The trustees are responsible for the strategic direction of the charity and are the guardians of the mission of the charity.

What is the mission of Catholic Care?
The mission of Catholic Care is stated as:

Catholic Care is a charitable organisation working on behalf of the Diocese of Leeds. It offers a variety of services and support, not only to the Catholic population, but to the wider community as a whole.

Catholic Care acts to support those in need of its services, especially the weak and the vulnerable and it acts as an advocate for those unable to represent themselves.

The primary purpose of the agency is to foster and influence a vision of how people can live together in Christian charity, love and justice, by taking the "caring Church" into the community.

What does CC do?
Catholic Care provides services to children, vulnerable adults and anyone who is need. The services we provide are:

  • Adoption
  • Children's residential homes services
  • Schools and family support services
  • Supported living services to people with learning disabilities
  • Residential services to people with learning disabilities
  • Supported living services to people with long term metal health issues
  • Services to older people
  • Services to the community to support vulnerable people such as asylum seekers.

What plans does CC have for the future?
We plan to continue the services we have and to extend our work with older people to ensure they have quality services that meet their needs as they grow older. Catholic Care will also develop closer relationships with parishes and schools and improve our ability to make early interventions with children and their families to ensure they do not enter the care system.
