School and Community Service - Schools FAQ
Who is the service for?
The service is primarily for Catholic secondary and primary schools in the Diocese of Leeds. However, you do not have to be a Catholic school to benefit from the service.

What do schools social workers do?
They work with school pupils, their families and teachers on an individual basis and also in groups to assist them to deal with the problems they face that prevent them from reaching their full potential and fully participating in the life of the school.

Is there a charge for the service?
Yes. The service is paid for by the school. This enables it to be of real service and free at the point of delivery to school children and their families.

How does the school staff access the service?
Contact us at Catholic Care. Our schools and family work manager will then arrange to visit your school and discuss the service with you. You will receive a comprehensive schools information pack that sets out the services we offer and the charges.

Are the social workers qualified?
All our schools social workers are qualified social workers and register with their professional social work body. Some of our staff have additional qualifications in counselling and specialise in bereavement work.

How do pupils access the service?
This is done through the school staff who will direct pupils to towards the service. Once the service is established, pupils may self-refer to the service.

Is the service confidential?
Yes. This is really important as it is a service based on building trust between people.

Will a local authority social worker become involved?
No. That will only happen in very serious cases where there is evidenced concern for the wellbeing and safety of a child. Child protection procedures would then have to take priority.
