What We Do - Adoption

Catholic Care welcomes applications from all married couples and single people wishing to adopt.

Catholic Care recognises and acknowledges the very difficult and damaged backgrounds that children placed for adoption may have experienced, and would not expect such children and their adoptive parents to cope with their new and changing family situations without the availability of adequate post-adoption support.

Therefore, the agency is committed to provide a consistent level of service to adopters and children for an unspecified length of time, which will take into account the needs and wishes of the Adoptee/Adoptive Parent/Parents and, if appropriate, the family of birth. This support should not be dependent upon where people live.

Areas of work covered by the Adoption Service:

  • Prepare and assess prospective adoptive applicants.
  • Present applicants to Adoption Panel.
  • Approve suitable applicants.
  • Undertake comprehensive family finding work.

Provide Post-adoption Support as appropriate, for example:

  • Planning of contact whether direct or indirect.
  • Mediation skills - often valuable when placements run into difficulties.
  • Assistance in helping child/children/families to form secure attachment relationships.
  • Provide practical strategies which are compatible with families own style and culture.
  • Facilitate multi-agency working between adoptive families and appropriate professionals.
  • Offer counselling, support, advice, advocacy and guidance as required.
  • Provide an intermediary service.
  • Support to adults seeking birth family members.
  • Assistance to persons requiring access to birth records.
  • Provide therapeutic intervention and support.

The agency will undertake to provide a worker who is qualified and who is skilled in adoption and post adoption work.

Adoption offers a permanent, stable and loving relationship for children who cannot be cared for by their birth parents and gives a child the precious gift of a family for life. If you are thinking about being an adopter you may like to talk this through in confidence with one of our adoption team.
