Aims & Objectives (specialisms)
We cater for six young people of mixed gender, between the ages of 6 -12. When a young person reaches the age of 12, if the placement is felt to still be in their best interests, according to his/her care plan, a decision will be made regarding the continuation of the placement. The Home is not modified to accommodate children who are physically disabled. Our overall aim is:
"To promote physical, emotional and social development by means of a child centred system in the home, which reflects a family style of living. To provide a safe nurturing environment, to help individual children and young people develop the skills, to cope with changing circumstances within their lives"
OUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES ARE:
The home exists to provide care in a safe environment, on a short or long term basis. Children and young people accommodated in the home are supported to help deal with past experiences such as separation or abuse, to prepare for a return to their own families, a move to a substitute family or more appropriate residential unit
General Description
The home is a large brick built detached residence, which occupies a prominent position on a main road in a suburb of Bradford.
The home is close to local schools and leisure amenities, suitable for the young people accommodated. It is within easy reach of local shops and parks and is adjacent to the bus stop, which gives easy access to the centre of Bradford and surrounding area. The building has large secure and private gardens to the front and rear. A decking area has been built to provide an outside patio area. The house has retained some of its original features, which give many of the rooms a pleasing appearance.
Facilities in the home consist of a lounge, playroom, dining room, consisting of colour TV. with full satellite system - DVD player - Play station / Cube / Wii games console - Table Football, Air hockey table - Range of toys / books / games - Art material and a couple of computers for use by the young people. At the back of the house is a large garden consisting of play area and equipment, trampoline and a splash pool (seasonal).
Encouragement is given to all young people to participate in recreational sporting and cultural activities, either through their individual schools or local Sport and Leisure Centres. These include, horse riding, swimming, football coaching and residential school trips.
Staff arranges and organise numerous outings and activities, including trips to theme parks, seaside and taking the young people on holiday. In the past we have taken the young people to Feurteventura, Lanzarote, France - Euro Disney.
All the young people have their own single bedroom (with a sink housed in a vanity unit) which they are encouraged to personalise
The young people in the home are provided with adequate, properly prepared, wholesome and nutritious food. We take account of preference and where possible, allow some measure of choice, though the style should approximate to that of a shared family meal rather than a "café style" selection. A young person's dietary requirements related to health, religious, racial or cultural background
are met.
The aim within the home will be the control and discipline of young people through encouragement and reward. This is promoted through positive relationships between staff and young people. A merit system is in place to encourage the young people to achieve additional financial rewards through positive and acceptable behaviours. The use of sanctions within the home is governed by the regulations. A sanction book is maintained containing a record of any unacceptable behaviour and the measure employed; the young person is asked to record his/her comments. A list of permissible and forbidden sanctions are available for inspection
Inspection (Ofsted)
It is a legal requirement that the home is inspected by "Ofsted". These inspections are unannounced.
Statement of Purpose
A "Statement of Function and Purpose" document is regularly updated and kept on site; this document is accessible to all personnel and other appropriate individuals.
Complaints Procedure
We are always willing to listen to children or relatives and we will try to help with any problems or difficulties. Please feel free to approach the Home Manager or Deputy if you are not satisfied or wish to discuss anything to do with the care we provide. Alternatively an independent complaints procedure exists.
Records
A record is kept for every child; these are confidential and are kept in a secure place. Access to some records is restricted by regulations.
Staff will use their discretion when sharing information with young people, taking into account their age and understanding
Visitors
We are willing to work with parents who visit and with past and prospective careers and to offer continuing support as far as is practicable.
Authorised visitors and friends are free to visit at any reasonable time. Please make arrangements in advance so that children are in and a room is available for your visit. Children can make and receive private telephone calls on their pay phone
