What We Do - Community Support

Community SupportCommunity Development Services - changing lives

The Community Development Service offers support to the development of community based projects in partnership with other organisations and charities. We support vulnerable and marginalised people through the provision of refuge, hospitality and basic foods and clothing in partnership with other organisations and charities

This service supports local groups in the creation of local responses to local issues. In particular the Service Manager has worked closely with the mental health services of Leeds and Bradford, with parish and community groups, and with religious orders to support initiatives that address poverty and disadvantage.
A key strategy is project development under the umbrella of Catholic Care - using our charitable status, retaining where possible the employment aspect of a project.

The Community Development Service employs one part-time officer and relies significantly on volunteers and partnerships. During the year work was initiated with St. Benedict's Parish, Garforth through a consultation process exploring provision for older people. At St. Mary's, Bradford the worker supports the St. Mary's Development Group that provides, in partnership with other voluntary organisations, services to local people in need of some provision for homeless people unable to secure benefits.

The Community Development Officer currently supports the following community projects:

  • St. Mary's, Bradford: ‘Welcome' drop-in / homelessness / asylum seekers potential users in partnership with Assisi House and The Abigail Project, Bradford;
  • Kingston Terrace, Leeds in partnership with the Sisters of Charity, the Simon Community and Leeds Irish Health and Home.

Other projects, charities and organisations supported include:-

  • STOP, Leeds (Start Treating Others Positively) a domestic violence support project
  • One City Project, Leeds Ecumenical links to Anglican Church
  • Seacroft Good Neighbours
  • Leeds Older People
  • Leeds' Churches Together in Mission
