What We Do - Older People's Service
Older people's ServiceThe Huddersfield Deanery Project aims to promote the practical, social and spiritual well-being of older people in the area of the Roman Catholic Deanery of Huddersfield. The Project deals with concerns of older people especially those arising from loneliness and isolation by offering direct or indirect help. The service is staffed by one manager, a development worker, administrative support, escort staff and volunteers and operates in the Ashbrow Ward of Huddersfield. The Project has 41 volunteers and serves 1025 older people on its database.

Funding is through the Deighton Brackenhall Initiative (DBI) via the local Primary Care Trust, Community Liaison and the Church Urban Fund.

There are two luncheon clubs:

  • Friday Friends, which meets on a Friday in Bradley and offers weekly meetings to 60 older people and up to 3 holidays per year as well as monthly outings. Friday Friends meet at St Bernadette's church hall where a credit union collection point is held, a book club is operated and a healthy fruit and vegetable bag project (costing £1.00 per bag) is offered each week.
  • Thursday Friends meets on a Thursday in Brackenhall (part of the DBI area) and offers a lunch and activities to 20 people.

Both these groups are dependant on volunteer support for their continued success.

There are also various activity groups taking place in the DBI area - Gentle Exercise, Craft Class, and Happy Mondays and Happy Wednesdays Dance Classes.

There are two intergenerational groups, Bridge the Gap 1 and 2 which take place at All Saints Catholic College and Almondbury High School which involve six 14 year olds at each school and ten older people. It is an opportunity for older people to meet each other joined by students of the school to enjoy shopping, activities in school and outings. In this way, relationships are developed and an understanding of each generation is built.

The gardening scheme and the handy person's scheme are two practical initiatives formed from partnership working within the area. There are 52 members on the gardening scheme, which is operated by Briarcourt Gardens, a horticultural scheme for young adults with learning disabilities and a new handy person scheme has just been launched working in partnership with Fresh Horizons called Help at Hand.

A Prayer Group meets fortnightly at the Presentation Convent, which is attended by 12 people. It provides a lovely time of reflection and sharing and is open to all denominations.

The office is an advice and information centre located in Bradley and older people can drop in for help and advocacy.

The manager attends the Kirklees Older People's Partnership Board, joint meetings with the Kirklees Primary Care Trust and also Adult Services.
